The Cockapoo, also affectionately known as a Cockadoodle, is a charming cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. This pairing brings together the Cocker’s loyal, affectionate nature with the Poodle’s intelligence and low-shedding coat, creating one of the very first non-shedding, family-friendly designer breeds.
Cockapoos are actually considered one of the very first “designer breeds,” with intentional crossings dating back to the 1950s in the United States. Their early popularity was driven by families looking for a small companion dog with a friendly temperament and reduced shedding. Unlike many modern hybrid breeds, Cockapoos have been beloved for decades and have developed a consistent reputation for their temperament and versatility.
Cockapoos are known for being easy to train, eager to please, and wonderfully social. Thanks to the Poodle’s high intelligence and the Cocker Spaniel’s people-oriented personality, they often excel in obedience training and even therapy or emotional support roles. They adore belly rubs, long walks, and quality time with their people. Their size makes them small enough to travel with, yet sturdy enough for playtime with children, which is why they’ve remained such a popular family companion for generations.
Cockapoos come in a variety of colors and coat types, ranging from straight to wavy to tightly curled. While many are low-shedding, coat type can vary depending on genetics. Regular grooming helps maintain their soft texture and keeps them comfortable.
Cockapoos that resemble the Cocker Spaniel more closely are often called “Smoothies.” Their coats may become wavier as they mature, but they typically shed a bit more than the traditional Cockapoo.
All of our puppies are sold without breeding rights and should be spayed or neutered by 12 months of age.
